CAPT Paul Abraham, who has died aged 64, was a formidable, unflappable and distinguished Cold War submariner who spent much of his career operating beneath the waves in the High North, or training and selecting others to do so. Abraham’s career in the Royal Navy spanned 36 and a half years, marked by intense submarine patrols and innovative command decisions. Early service in Ocelot, Torbay, and Trafalgar during the 1980s placed him on the Cold War front line, shadowing Soviet submarines in the North Atlantic and Arctic.
