Notice of Cancellation

Government and Corporate teammates, individual members, and other interested parties:

Due to the federal budget issues and resultant government shutdown, many of the key speakers who are either active-duty military personnel or civilian government employees are unable to attend the in-person Annual Symposium & Industry Update (ASIU) which was scheduled for November 12 and 13 in Arlington, VA. Accordingly, the Naval Submarine League Executive Committee has determined it is in the best interests of our partners to CANCEL the ASIU scheduled for these dates.

The Annual Meeting will be held as an online event in order for us to comply with our Bylaws and report the results of the elections, receiving annual reports of the Officers, presenting awards and other items.

The Naval Submarine League remains open for business!

  • The Board of Directors will meet virtually on 12 November 2025, 8:30 – 11:30 am.
  • The one hour Annual Meeting for required reports and updates to NSL members that normally opens the symposium will still be held, virtually, on November 12th at 12:30 pm Eastern time. More information will follow for participation guidelines.
  • We are operating as always for communications, planning our events, and supporting our individual and corporate member base.

We are evaluating the ability to conduct the ASIU later this year. This is dependent on the government re-opening as well as formal approval for speakers to participate, which is controlled by DoD/DoW. Their bandwidth has been affected by government furloughs and approval timelines are unclear. We will work closely with our sponsors, exhibitors, and registrants to determine the best way ahead.

This action was not taken lightly, but with the uncertainty in our battle space, we believe this is the proper way ahead. We greatly appreciate the ongoing support of our membership base and look forward to our continued working relationships.

Sincerely,
ADM John Richardson, USN (Ret)
Chair, NSL

This time in Submarine History

September 30, 1954

The US commissioned the first nuclear-powered submarine: the USS Nautilus. Much larger than the diesel-electric submarines that preceded it, the Nautilus stretched 319 feet and displaced 3,180 tons. It could remain submerged for almost unlimited periods because its atomic engine needed no air and only a very small quantity of nuclear fuel. The uranium-powered nuclear reactor produced steam that drove propulsion turbines, allowing the Nautilus to travel underwater at speeds in excess of 20 knots.

NSL Highlight: USS Scranton Holds Change of Command Ceremony

The Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine USS Scranton (SSN 756) held a change of command ceremony onboard Naval Base Point Loma, San Diego, Calif., June 20, 2025.
Cmdr. Anthony Ardito relieved Cmdr. Jeff Ransom as the Scranton’s commanding officer during the ceremony.

Cmdr. Anthony Ardito most recently served at United States Strategic Command and was the executive officer of USS Kentucky (GOLD) (SSBN 737) prior to that. He also served aboard Los Angeles-class submarines USS Columbus (SSN 762) and USS Annapolis (SSN 760).

“I am honored to join the ranks of the iron horse,” said Ardito. “Scranton is the premiere fighting force of the fleet, ready and capable because of the iron men that bring the ship to life.”
