Torpedoman Second Class Henry Breault Award

The Torpedoman Second Class Henry Breault Award for Submarine Professional Excellence recognizes E6 and below personnel (Active or Reserve) for achievement, contribution, specific action or consistent performance, which best exemplifies the traditional spirit embodied in the Submarine Force.

2025 Awardee

TM1(SS) Jonathan M. Barnes, USN

for outstanding performance onboard USS INDIANA (SSN 789).

Petty Officer Barnes has consistently demonstrated a commitment to excellence in all his endeavors. During INDIANA’s most recent deployment, his ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex issues kept the ship at peak readiness for mission tasking in spite of a degradation in the torpedo tube firing air system. He developed an innovative solution to mitigate the risk to system integrity, while ensuring the ship’s full firing capacity was maintained. His in-depth understanding of ship control characteristics and mission requirements marked him as an essential member of INDIANA’s pilot watchbill while deployed to EUCOM. He led his watch team through all tasks and provided timely insights to the Officer of the Deck and the Chief of the Boat on how to manage the ship through challenging sea states and operational requirements. As a key contributor to INDIANA’s change of homeport preparations, Petty Officer Barnes was selected to lead the boat’s shipment of personally owned vehicles from Groton, CT to Pearl Harbor, HI. His ability to manage multiple priorities and coordinate efforts across various departments was instrumental in meeting tight deadlines for vehicle shipments, ensuring crew quality of life during a stressful transit to the Pacific Fleet.

Petty Officer Barnes is most deserving of recognition by the Naval Submarine League to receive the Torpedoman Second Class Henry Breault Award for Submarine Professional Excellence.

Torpedoman Second Class Henry Breault

Henry Breault was born in Putnam, Connecticut, on 14 October 1900. He enlisted in the British Royal Navy at sixteen years of age and, after serving under the White Ensign for four years, joined the U.S. Navy. On 28 October 1923 Torpedoman 2nd Class Breault was a member of the crew of USS O-5 (SS-66) when that submarine was sunk in a collision. Though he could have escaped, Breault chose to assist a shipmate, and remained inside the sunken submarine until both were rescued more than a day later. For his “heroism and devotion to duty” on this occasion, Henry Breault was awarded the Medal of Honor. Following twenty years of U.S. Navy service, Henry Breault became ill with a heart condition. He died at the Naval Hospital at Newport, Rhode Island, on 4 December 1941.
